An Ocean of Information: Berkeley offers up its vision of ubiquitous storage

One of the features that makes EMC's Symmetrix Enterprise Storage System unique is its ability to anticipate and react to user behavior to make information delivery seamless. That interaction between microcode, discs and cache has helped make Symmetrix the standard for enterprise information storage.

On the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, a team of researchers is working toward building a futuristic global storage network that's built on a similar foundation. Sponsored by several companies and government agencies, including EMC the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Defense and Nortel, the OceanStore project is dedicated to developing "an architecture for global-scale persistent storage."
