Surprise as investor relations YouTube video goes viral

A VIDEO produced for Corning Incorporated’s (NYSE:GLW) Investor Day last month has become the most-watched corporate video of all time on YouTube with more than 8.8 million views.

The 6-minute video was shown during Corning CEO Wendell Weeks’ presentation to institutional investors and analysts in New York Feb. 4. It is meant to showcase potential applications of the specialty glass and ceramics manufacturer’s products in electronics and everyday products.

During the analyst day, the video received muted applause from the assembled investor audience. But after the company uploaded the video to YouTube, it quickly caught the public’s imagination, spreading on gadget forums and Facebook.

At the time of publishing this, it is thought to be the most viewed corporate video of all time on YouTube and is ranked as the 22nd most viewed video of all time in the Science & Technology category.

Breaks all the rules of viral video

Called “A Day Made of Glass…,”  the video depicts a family using futuristic glass technologies such as touch-operated kitchen counter tops, appliances, mirrors, tables, glass road signs and an interactive bus stop.

The video was produced by creative agency Doremus, which has posted a story about how it was filmed over 6 days in San Francisco. John Mannion, director of client relations at Doremus told Marketing Daily that the agency and the company had no intention for the video to be viral.

“It breaks all the rules when you think about it. It’s six minutes long; it’s not funny, it doesn’t have celebrities in it, it’s not intended to be sent around to your friends,” said Mannion.

Whether the video’s popularity has done anything for the popularity of Corning’s stock is less clear, however. After hitting a high of $23.37 on the day of the investor event, it has traded sideways for several weeks before dropping to close yesterday at $21.42.

That said, buying stocks is something people on YouTube obviously do think about. The most popular comment on Corning’s video urges viewers to: “BUY STOCK IN WINDEX NOW!!!”
